NATURE OF WORK
This is a responsible entry level Public Works position requiring the exercise of independent work and mature discretion.
Work involved responsibility for performing repair and maintenance duties and some delegated details in relieving a superior of considerable and procedural work. Develop their own work methods within broadly established policies and procedural requirements.
The general purpose of the position is to provide assistance as necessary to the Public Works Supervisor.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Repair and maintenance of streets, parks, swimming pool and playgrounds
Assist in general maintenance work, including lawn mowing, edging, seeding, snow removal, cultivating, fertilizing, sod laying and hedge trimming, sweeping and raking of litter and emptying trash dumpsters.
Clean and maintain facilities.
Perform minor repair work including but not limited to plumbing, masonry, electrical, painting, carpentry, metal work and vehicle and equipment repair.
Drive vehicles and operate certain other motorized equipment.
Perform safety checks on facilities and equipment.
May move furniture, climb and perform other physical activities as required in the performance of assigned duties.
JOB CONTEXT
The Entry Level Public Works employee is a full time, permanent position. The immediate supervisor for this position is the Public Works Supervisor. The person in this position works regular hours, year round the majority of the time, but some nights and weekend hours are required as needed. The stress level associated with this position is average, depending upon the monthly workload cycle. Physical work consists of, but is not limited to, must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force regularly. Must be able to work in a team environment or by themselves. Possess basic math skills.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
A valid Missouri motor vehicle driver license
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The person in this position must have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
Ability to deal with the public and other employees courteously and tactfully and to elicit information effectively, and to convey concise and accurate explanations of ordinances, policies, procedures and requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed in an outdoor setting and involves considerable public contact. This position may require driving of city vehicles. The position involves sitting, walking, standing, lifting and driving
